How To Be A Profit “Producer”, Not A Run-of-the-Mill “Multi-Tasker”

Like many of you, I’ve been pretty busy with summertime activities, many of which are certainly not business related…

Now that Labor Day is here, it’s time to get down to serious work.  The problem is, I’ve left so many loose ends around that my “To-Do” list threatens to keep me preoccupied for many weeks.  I can’t let that happen if I intend to put money in the bank.  Either can you…  So here’s what to do:

I mentioned in the video that to make money online, one of the key tasks must be to get a Squeeze Page (or Lead Capture Page) up and running!  Without your Squeeze Page online and ready to grab you paying customers, you’re just FLIRTING with success.  Once you bring that Squeeze Page to life… you’re MARRIED to it!

If you’re reading to make the commitment… to marry success instead of just flirt with it… get my FREE 3-day video series that will “patiently” walk you through the step by step process.

WARNING:  The link to my FREE 3-day video series is ONLY for those of you who are seriously ready to put bucks in the bank NOW!

Great message and video David … and I so agree, now is the time to revisit goals and prepare for the months ahead. I just updated my goals for September and now I’m excited about all of my plans – yee ha!

    Hello David

I got a lot of insight from you post, you use the term “flirting with and being married to”. Has I was reading I started thinking about my son and what I always tell him. “Do not do the motions and act like you are doing something so you can make people believe this is who you are, really do it and make them know this is who you are and this is what you do”. This is how you make things happen, this is how you become a true fixture in someone else’s reality. When you are just going through the steps, others will start to see as you are just playing a role. They will not not take you as a stand up person, and someone they can believe in. I am not a sales person but this post was really insightful, thank you so much.

  3. Kevin DeRoo September 5, 2011 at 11:58 pm #

    Hey David,

You’re absolutely right that we need to take care of the productive things on our list first!

I’m a big believer in having a daily to-do list and I always teach my students to set up their daily list the night before putting productive “actionable” items at the top of the list.

As you stated in your video, don’t worry if you don’t complete your entire list of things to do every day. At the end of the day take a look at the items which you didn’t complete and evaluate whether to put them on tomorrow’s list or make whatever changes you feel are appropriate.

Awesome Video Dave, thanks for sharing!

  4. Lesly Federici September 6, 2011 at 8:58 am #

    Hi David,
Looking forward to receiving your 5-day boot camp! The famous “To Do” list doesn’t work anymore! I learned a lot from Gavin Mountford about this too, so looking forward to hearing your perspective. 🙂

    • David Merrill September 6, 2011 at 10:55 pm #

I’d actually say, Lesly, that the To Do list works, but it should not be your top priority. Productivity is the key to tucking some cash into the bank. Completing a bunch of to-do’s may keep you busy and may make you THINK you’re getting somewhere, but unless they are highly targeted and productive to-do’s, they’re actually taking time away from your really important tasks.

    Hi David,

    Great video.

Personally, I am not an affiliate marketer. I prefer to work with companies that have multiple level compensations plans so I can leverage my sales. I think we need to put a plan together and execute it to be successful on line these days. A landing page is just the start of the process.

The trick is that most things take time to germinate. If you follow the wrong ideas, it may be many months before you realize it was a waste of time.

    • David Merrill September 12, 2011 at 12:53 pm #

You are so right, John, about the dangers of following the “wrong ideas”.

That’s why it really essential… if you’re SERIOUS about making money online… either directly or through an MLM or whatever… to get a good coach! Hire a mentor! He or she will make sure that you are taking the right steps and not wasting time. So many people drop out because they get tired of waiting for the efforts to germinate, or because their efforts will never germinate because they’ve worked so hard doing the wrong things.

I have a great coach who has really put me on the right track, and keeps me there. I’m so thankful for his direction and incredible techniques that he’s mastered and shows me “how to”! People think that’s strange… that I’m a coach, yet I hire a coach on a regular basis.

It’s not strange. I don’t know ANYBODY who’s be really successful without a coach. Not just in internet marketing, but in anything at all. Therapists go to other therapists, doctors to other doctors, great athletes hang on every word from their coaches… it’s not strange… it’s THE way that people succeed in anything. Internet marketing is no different.

  6. Linnea September 14, 2011 at 12:03 pm #

    Hi David,

I couldn’t agree with you more. If you don’t put the marketing and content production activities (asset building activities) at the top of the list, you have a tendency to never get enough time for them. Thank you.

  7. Kyle Quinlan September 14, 2011 at 12:29 pm #

Thanks for the productivity tips. I get so frustrated some days when it feels like I’m not getting anything done.
I like to start off my day with tackling the hardest task or the one that’s “closest to the money.” If I can start off this way, then I feel good about myself and I still have the whole day to do other things. This helps my productivity throughout the whole day.
It’s easy to get off track and I find that when I revisit my goals daily it helps me stay focused.
    Thanks for the post David.

  8. Jenna Waites September 19, 2011 at 8:53 pm #

I like your idea of a “productive list” David! That is VERY important. I often find myself very busy, but somehow accomplish nothing! So I too have a “productive list” however, I will only allow myself at most 4 things on my list for any day. I make sure they are the most important items that need to get done to get me closer to my goal. I focus on just those few items and if more gets done, I feel like I had a hugely successful day!

This is great information, and soimething we all need to be reminded of from time to time.

My squeeze pages are happily growing my list day by day. With over 16,000 on the database now, I can assure everyone that this is an essential tool for success on the internet.

Prioritize on the basis of what makes you money, and you will get more.

  15. Joyce Edwards October 1, 2011 at 1:23 pm #

    Hi David,
I not into multi tasking and here is whay. When you multitask you never get things done that are important. I see people who try to do this and never really get things done the best way. I don’t think most people can focus well on multiple task at one time./ I do make a list of things that I have to get done and give myself a time limit, lets say 2 hours working on a specific project and totally focusing on that and nothing else. This has serve me must better than thinking I can multitask. I can’t watch a video and talk on the phone at the same time and get my attention to both at a 100%. One task will always suffer.

      You’re doing it right, Joyce.

Work uninhibited for solid blocks of time, like 2 hours. Let nothing distract you when you’re doing Productive work.

You can always dabble with”busy” work in your spare time. As you build increasing profits, though, you find that you don’t really want to be sidetracked with any busy work, and that’s the stuff you end up outsourcing or delegating.

  16. Stephan Hilson October 1, 2011 at 10:51 pm #

I could relate to the feeling of doing many tasks like publishing content and engage in social networking. But I haven’t seen any increase on profits. I like the idea of adding productivity and developing products to make the website more profitable. It seems interesting to drop few of the lists especially if it contribute little and outsourcing seems a good idea too.

    Hi David,

Excellent video with useful tip ! When I first started internet marketing, I was promoting a business system with squeeze pages but I did not find them essential for me at that time because I don’t even have people opt in for my free ebook and etc. All the names I got at my backoffice are the people I approached before and that’s it.

However, after some time online, I realize that I need to have other interesting content to share before making my prospects fill in their details. So, I am on my way to get a free capture page soon to test out the response 🙂

Thank you very much for your tip again because this is an important reminder for me if I want to make it better online 🙂

this is such a great post and video! What you said cannot be said too many times or emphasized too much. That is that we must focus on the productive tasks every day not just seeing how many “tasks” we can complete. If you can complete only 2 or 3 KEY activities everyday, then that is way more important that a dozen “tasks” that may or may not increase your bank account. The thing that home-based business entrepreneurs need to keep in mind is that in order to make money, they need to be engaged in money-making activities. Picking up clothes at the dry cleaner and getting supplies at office depot are NOT money making activities.

The first thing in the day is really the very best time to get your critical income producing activities done. Before checking the news, sports, weather or even your email. And if you have a job… before going to work if at all possible. By the time you get home… well, it probably just won’t happen if you didn’t get it done early in the day.

Since I work with couples, I love your use of the words flirting with and marrying. Flirting is so much easier. it is fun. We feel stimulated and alive and energized. We feel on top of the world as if we can do anything.

But when we marry, now that’s a commitment. We put our cards on the table, we present our whole self, we do the work, we get connected. And it is not always fun and games. But the end result can be marvelous if we have been willing to do what it takes.

David, unfortunately it is all too easy to do the “little” jobs first and to convince ourselves that reading the daily emails and emptying the spam and trash folders are really important things to do.

Of course, by the time we have done that there is little time left for real work. A friend of mine says “Do the IPOs first. The IPOs are Income Producing Activities.
