You Can Have A Profitable Online Business

You Can Have A Profitable Online BusinessYou can have a profitable online business if you have 2 things, and if you do 1 additional thing.

Because I coach people, I hear a lot about the trials and errors and struggles of trying to get an online business that can actually bring in profits, and that can help you replace your day job, or supplement your retirement income.

You are not alone in this quest.

There’s a lot of help out there for you.

There are courses, software, and personal coaches to guide you along the way.

Some are better than others, of course.

Unfortunately, some will attempt to take advantage of you by selling you things that could, but probably won’t help you along.

I come from a background of being in the trenches every day.

I’m constantly showing folks how to build a profitable online business.

I’d like to offer you a 3 step approach that can help you get up and running.

Commitment

Here’s something that there is no training, teaching, tutorial or course for.

You must have a very strong sense of commitment to having a profitable online business.

I think one of the tell-tale signs of someone who won’t make it is when they tell me “if this doesn’t work…”

Or they say things like “I’m going to try this for a short time, but if it doesn’t work…”

These are people who do not “have what it takes.”

Here’s the very first thing “it takes”… the very first thing you must have.

You must have, not just a sense of commitment, but a very strong sense of commitment.

If you are going to be successful, you can’t ever wonder what if you fail.

There is no “fail.”

Never.

There will be failures, but they will not add up to failing.

They will simply be stepping stones to success.

There’s also no such thing as a “Plan B.”

There is only one plan… to succeed.

The reason you will not fail is that you are driven by your “why.”

You must always be reminded of why you need to succeed.

Who you need to succeed for.

Exactly what your ultimate success will look and feel like.

This is what will fuel you daily, unending commitment.

Clarity

In addition to commitment, it’s critical to have clarity about the actual path to success.

How will you achieve what you want?

What will be your exact strategy?

There are many good routes to take.

One is only better than another insofar as it suits your individual strengths and skillsets.

You can build a profitable business online by doing affiliate marketing.

Learn how to build a following around your niche, then sell them affiliate products and services that they serve their needs.

It’s really that simple.

The details can get quite intricate and there are many many ways you can promote your affiliate products.

But, in essence, you need customers and you must locate products to sell them.

It’s not unlike running an antique shop.

You know that you need to go to auctions and estate sales to find the kinds of things your customers want.

But that’s just one business model… affiliate marketing.

You can also build a content site and sell memberships to people.

Or you can create digital information products and sell them to people.

You can operate and monetize a blog.

You can create multiple niche sites.

You can run an e-commerce site and sell physical products to your customers.

You can become a representative for a company and frequent social media sites to network with people, and have them join your team.

You can offer services… many different types of services.

Maybe you can do copywriting, social media management or something else for your clients.

The fact is, there are many business models you can adopt.

There are tons of different and overlapping strategies you can deploy.

But you must have a very clear plan mapped out so you don’t just meander all over the internet looking for an elusive foothold to run a profitable online business from.

Clarity is of the essence.

Consistency

Now, for the one thing you must do.

You must take you plan and implement it.

More importantly, you must implement your plan consistently, each and every day.

Too many people come online waiting for an “aha moment” when it suddenly becomes clear what they must do.

Too many think that implementing means waiting for inspiration.

If you decide to hold off implementing your big strategy until you are struck with inspiration, then you’ll probably wait a very long time… and then quit your dreams.

To achieve your dream of running a profitable online business, you must treat it like a business.

That means, you show up at your home office every single day.

I don’t care if you work from your kitchen table, you must sit down at regular hours on a daily basis and implement your strategy.

You can always alter your strategy, your plans, even your niche and your entire business model.

But you can never ever vack away from consistently working through the process you have set up to achieve success.

If you have a full time job, maybe you only have 2 hours a day to put into your business.

Work those 2 hours consistently, daily, without fail.

If you consider yourself full time, then you should plan on putting in 8 hours a day until your business is actually making a profit that you can live on.

Avoid working 12 hours one day, then 2 the next and 4 the third.

Strive for consistency.

Work through the process you have devised each and every day, for the amount of time you have allotted, and preferably during the same time slots each day.

You Can Have A Profitable Online Business

Those are my “3-C’s” to strive toward.

The 2 things you must have are Commitment and Clarity.

The 1 thing you must do is work your process Consistently.

Keep to this structure and you can have a profitable online business.

To the extent that you stray from it, your chances to succeed will be diminished.

Consistency is the number one thing I see. If you only do things when you can be bothered or when it suits you then your not being consistent. If you plan to write a blog post once a week at set time then that is what you must do, It reprograms your brain.. It becomes a good habit over time. You make some good points.

    WHY is important
Commitment and Clarity are also required.

    Thank You

    William

You’re certainly right, William, about consistency.

There are many things that we can be doing online, and those that we stick to consistently are the ones that move us forward the most.

As you say, the commitment required to keep to a consistent effort does “reprogram” your brain. It creates that “winner” mindset.

    Hi David,
I agree these 3-C’s are very powerful.
And they do go together, If you miss one of them things will change very quickly.
    Thank you for sharing!

Hi David, I love these principles. I had a blogging friends who was constantly changing what and how he wrote and arranged his blog. He was constantly frustrated that I got loads of visits and comments and he did not, but he had no consistency, people did not come over to him because they had no idea what they were going to read there. I believe this is the most important value for me, consistency.

    Enjoy the journey!

I like the example you’ve shared here, Mandy.

Being inconsistent leaves your followers feeling like they have nothing solid to turn to when they join your business or even just visit your blog or Facebook page.

It often comes from a lack of commitment, but also can be because someone lacks clarity in their own business objective. That, of course, translates into lack of clarity in the message they try to put out to their readers and customers.

    Hey David,

Love the three C’s I do have trouble with commitment – er…you know but I really do. I can get all excited about something and then see something else that I want to do. This is a struggle and has been for a long time.

The only way I can stay on this path of commitment is to write everything down on paper for the week, then break it down to days and hours.

If I don’t have that piece of paper, I would be all over the place lol.

Jumping around from one topic to another is a big problem for just about everyone trying to run an online business.

TMI (too much info) out there 🙂

I like your method for being true to your commitment, and I know you have a Friday Focus Group where you work with others to use Friday for focusing on what they’ll be working on the upcoming week.

Very cool, and it really does work.

    Hi David,
You are very correct with those 3 Cs. The problem I have in my region is technology. Often, I see some good results and get highly fueled to rinse and repeat but tech here is a big speed break.

While we struggle with expensive bandwidth, the little we get often times stops one from achieving more.

In any case, I do like what I do online from here. Comparative, my business is doing well online though I still strive for better results.

Thanks for boosting me in this post buddy

You’ve done a great job, Enstine, especially considering some of the tech issues that many people never face.

Even if we don’t have the kinds of problems you mentioned, though, people have other issues like just not understanding how to do something, or how overcome tech hurdles for lack of knowledge… even when the bandwidth is there.

The reason you’ve been successful even when faced with these ongoing issues is a great testament to the essential need for commitment.

    Hi David

You are so right about the 3C’s and they are the ingredient to any successful business.

Commitment maks you stay firm to your business no matter the challenges. Consistency helps to stay true to your goal. As you shared, if one isn’t consistent, it is going to affect one’s business.

I like the topic on strategy. You are right that one should stick with one strategy till it is grasped.

Thanks for sharing and have a swell week.

    • David Merrill 101 April 18, 2016 at 10:57 am #

“Stick with one strategy” for sure, Ikechi.

In fact, I usually tell people to stick with one strategy until (a) they’ve made it work, or (b) they decide it doesn’t work for them.

The only problem is you must maintain commitment to that strategy. You can’t try something for a week and decide it doesn’t work. You can’t try it starting in January, then in June decide it never worked when, really, you never gave it much of a try.

Stick with something consistently for at LEAST 3 months (better to do more). Then determine whether or not your consistent effort is paying off. If it is, do more of it. If not, then move on.

How will you do it, What is your strategy , Where is the route
Must haves the 2 things and 1 more
Commitment Clarity and the third Consistency.

I like try Yoda thing for sure… No try… only do.

I guess that’s really the essence of what I’m saying here, isn’t it?

At least for the consistency part.

The commitment and clarity are essential to it, though.

    Hey David,

True indeed. Commitment is one such thing which one can not be trained on. Either you have it or not. Many people fail in achieving success (whether online or offline) because they are not able to commit on a single thing for a longer period of time.

Making a profitable online business is not an easy task. It needs huge commitment and consistency than one can expect. As there is actually no one to monitor you, you must monitor your own habits and practices.

Thanks for sharing. Take care and have a great week ahead 🙂

Well, you’re right that now one can teach you commitment, Manidipa.

It helps to involve yourself with people that are committed, inspired and consistent in their efforts.

Even though you won’t “learn” commitment from them, it still sets patterns for you to follow if you’re watching carefully, have an open mind and are serious about improving yourself and your business.

    Nice to have you here.

  11. Joy Healey April 25, 2016 at 8:04 pm #

    Hi David,

Great post – I’m part-time in my online business so it has to fit round my main income; but it’s a very rare day if I don’t spend at least a couple of hours working online – usually more.

Now, I HAD been calling it my “Plan B” – because at the moment the majority of my income comes from my offline business, and I’m building my online business as “Plan B”, to be my “retirement income”. Looks like I’ll have to come up with a different phrase 🙂

That’s if anyone ever convinces me to retire!!

      Retire? What’s that, Joy?

You know, we can talk about whether or not to use the term “Plan B”… but we definitely cannot use the term “retire.”

      What does it mean?

I hear people say that “in the old days” people made enough money during their working years that they could retire and live off their pensions, life savings, whatever.

I don’t really think that happened too much in the “old days.” It happened in the 20th century for the first time ever as an economic “norm”, and that was mostly because of special programs that had been enacted to give “retired” folks a lifelong income.

But before the 20th century, I don’t even think the term existed.

And now, in the 21st, the economy has totally shifted away from the concept. There’s no more “net.” That’s why (1) most people don’t really retire anymore, if they even have employment to retire from, and (2) the biggest “safety net” we can now create for ourselves IMHO… is working on the “internet”.

    Hello David

I agree with you. These 3-Cs are very important to achieving a profitable online business. Entrepreneurs who ignore them do that at his own .

We need to be very sure of what we want to achieve in our online business from the outset before spending the first dollapurchase our domain name. It is the absense of clarity that makes most bloggers want to write about everything their mind can possibly fling to.

To profit online, you must consistently commit yourself and all within you in pursuit of that one clear path that will yield you your desired result.
